IF IT'S NOT ALREADY REQUIRED OF ME, WHY USE PEPNET?

PEPNet meets the needs of programs, funders, policy makers and other youth professionals in a variety of ways, making their work with youth both better and easier. Here are some of the ways different groups have used PEPNet to improve their work (click here to learn for how to use PEPNet):

DOES PEPNET OVERLAP WITH OTHER STANDARDS, FRAMEWORKS OR ACCREDITATIONS I ALREADY WORK WITH?

PEPNet is one of several frameworks and sets of standards used within the fields of workforce development, youth development and education. PEPNet directly correlates with federal Workforce Investment Act requirements (click here for a crosswalk of the PEPNet and WIA elements). In certain cases, such as the standards for CARF (an accrediting body for rehabilitation facilities), WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and the Malcolm Baldrige Business, Education and Health Care Awards, there is significant overlap in the area of quality management, as these were some of the initiatives examined in the PEPNet Enhancement Process. There are greater differences in the programmatic areas because of PEPNet's focus on youth development competencies. In other cases where there are greater programmatic similarities, such as the SCANS and Equipped for the Future frameworks, differences occur because of PEPNet's specific focus on youth, as opposed to adults or the general population. NYEC examined a multitude of youth development competency frameworks during its research review, and uses a framework from the Forum for Youth Investment as the basis for the PEPNet Standards on youth development competencies. Other significant influences include work from the Academy for Educational Development's Center for Youth Development, National Collaboration for Youth, Search Institute and the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth. In addition, PEPNet's past standards were linked to several quality program networks, including ECO of the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps, Commonwealth Corporation's Massachusetts Best Practices Network and NYEC's EDNet.

CAN PEPNET HELP ORGANIZATIONS SURVIVE FINANCIALLY?

  • PEPNet is not a grant and does not give any funding. However, PEPNet-Awarded programs have reported that their recognition helped them connect to funders and, in some cases, was a significant factor in their receiving a grant. Other programs that used PEPNet's resources but did not undertake the award process have said that PEPNet helped them focus organizationally, pull together key information and target areas for improvement, all of which enhanced their ability to seek funding. PEPNet's network also has helped professionals develop new relationships and identify opportunities for collaboration and fundraising. In addition, some funders have used PEPNet in their request for proposals and as a source to identify quality youth programs. Other funders have used PEPNet to provide technical assistance to grantees. PEPNet can help get everyone on the same page and speaking the same language about what "quality" means.
  • PEPNet can help maximize what can be done with limited funding. In this funding environment, there is no money or time to spend on strategies and practices that are not proven.
  • PEPNet's Self Assessment and Results Assessment tools can help a program identify areas of strength to use in marketing and fundraising efforts. Also, the Online Index of Quality Practices can be searched by funding source and thus may help in identifying potential funders.

IS PEPNET USEFUL IF I ALREADY KNOW WHAT NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED?

PEPNet's Online Index to Quality Practices contains over 1000 strategies and practices from exemplary programs and can be searched by specific PEPNet standard/indicator, youth population or key word. If a program is looking for ideas about "how" to correct or improve their current situation, this is a good place to look. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. In addition, the PEPNet Institute brings several hundred professionals together each year to learn in person about the strategies that are working around the country.
